If you've browsed around this website, you've probably noticed that I strongly endorse Pilates for many different purposes. I truly believe that it's the best overall form of exercise, and, in my opinion, the most enjoyable. People tend to take flexibility for granted, because they don't think that stretching will do anything for their looks. This is entirely untrue, though. The Pilates method is very commonly used by dancers, especially in ballet. I don't think I've ever seen a fat ballerina, or even a ballerina who didn't have an adorable figure! Dance conditioning movements lengthen your muscles, making you move more gracefully, stand taller and present a symmetrical, well aligned figure. It strengthens the entire body, especially the muscles that make up the body's core (the abs, back and glutes), which is what so many people sweat on weight machines trying to do. Pilates looks easy, and it really doesn't seem difficult simply because it's very much a mind/body practice - but by no means is it easy. As you learn and practice, you move from basic to advanced exercises, so you're always challenged. I love Pilates and recommend it without a smidge of hesitation.
